The Experimental Class of Huang Kezhi Basic Science and Technology Disciplines (formerly known as the Experimental Class of Combined B.S./M.S. Program ) was established in 2008. It is the earliest, most in-depth, and most effective experimental class for cultivating top-notch innovative talents in basic science and engineering disciplines established by Nanchang University in the context of the popularization of higher education. It is also one of the first batch of experimental zones for innovative talent cultivation models in Jiangxi Province. The Experimental Class integrates basic disciplines such as physics, chemistry, biological sciences, and mechanics, pooling the university's superior resources and collaborating with relevant colleges and schools. Aligning with the national "Top-notch Talent Cultivation Program" for basic disciplines, it innovates educational concepts, closely adhering to the localization and piloting of "the Model of Tsinghua University Tsien Excellence in Education Program", and exploring the establishment of a globally open talent cultivation system for local universities based on major challenging problems. It emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of science and engineering, the integration of science and education, individualized instruction, and elite education to cultivate future first-class leading talents in basic science and engineering disciplines who are "ambitious, have a broad foundation, distinctive personalities, and are courageous in innovation". The Experimental Class of Huang Kezhi Basic Science and Technology Disciplines implements a training model of "interdisciplinary integration, science and education fusion, personalized cultivation, and collaborative education," and an educational mechanism of "credit system, mentorship system, academy system, small class size, personalized approach, and internationalization" to cultivate students' sustainable development capabilities, innovative potential, and spirit of exploration. It features a curriculum system of "interdisciplinary integration and professional interdisciplinary integration," laying a solid foundation in mathematics and physics and strong multidisciplinary professional knowledge. The mentorship system integrates science and education, reflecting the educational philosophy of individualized instruction, science and education integration, and personalized development. Small-class seminars taught by renowned professors enable research-based teaching by teachers and self-directed learning by students. It provides multi-channel, highly funded international education to broaden students' global perspectives and academic horizons. The academy system, promoting collaborative education, achieves "four self-educations," cultural enrichment, and resource sharing. In 2011, the teaching reform project of The Experimental Class of Huang Kezhi Basic Science and Technology Disciplines, "Nanchang University's Exploration of Establishing a Base for Cultivating Top-notch Innovative Talents", was included in the Jiangxi Provincial Teaching Reform Pilot Project and selected as one of the first batch of Jiangxi Provincial Talent Cultivation Model Innovation Experimental Zone Projects. In 2014, the teaching reform project of the The Experimental Class of Huang Kezhi Basic Science and Technology Disciplines won the second prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award. In 2022, the "Nanchang University Physics (including Theoretical Mechanics) Top-notch Student Training Base," based on the Experimental Class for Basic Science and Engineering, was approved as one of the first batch of Jiangxi Provincial Basic Disciplines Top-notch Student Training Base Construction Projects. Over the past decade, The Experimental Class of Huang Kezhi Basic Science and Technology Disciplines has achieved remarkable results in nurturing talent, producing a group of outstanding students with great development potential and innovative abilities. In the first 12 cohorts, 384 students obtained 61 provincial-level or higher innovation and entrepreneurship projects during their undergraduate studies, published 94 academic papers, including 2 papers published as first authors in JACS and Advanced Materials, 500 awards in provincial and ministerial-level academic competitions, and one student won the China Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award. |
